Embracing Change and Uncertainty

“Embrace uncertainty.  Some of the most beautiful chapters in our lives won’t have a title until much later.” – Bob Goff

As 2019 approached, I thought about what expectations and hopes I had for the coming year.  I knew that I would be experiencing a lot of changes in my life and I felt anxious about them, but I decided to focus on embracing change and declared that 2019 would be the Year of Adventure.  If I viewed change as an adventure, it would be exciting rather than stress-inducing.

With this positive mindset, I have mostly handled the changes in my life with a smile on my face and an instinct to prepare for these changes.  Starting in mid-February, my husband began hearing back from graduate schools that he applied to, and we spent two months waiting to hear back from schools.  During those two months, I could have let the anticipation drive me insane (and I did every now and then), but I tried to focus on the excitement of moving to a new part of the United States for the first time in my life.  My husband decided to accept his offer from the University of Michigan, and we are looking forward to this new adventure! I could have been overwhelmed thinking about moving to Michigan and finding a job, but instead, I embraced the change and focused on all the opportunities that will come with moving from New England to the Midwest.  I attended a job fair and am in the process of applying for teaching positions. My husband and I signed a lease and set things up with a moving company for the end of July. We are prepared for and excited about what this next chapter in our lives will bring! I have kept an optimistic outlook by viewing all the uncertainties as possibilities.

Some people are more prone to feeling anxious and stressed out when life brings change, and that is okay.  The next time life throws you a curve ball, I encourage you to look at that curve ball as an adventure. Life is one big adventure after all.
